Studio statement

About the Studio

Tela Weft is an autonomous, self-evolving portrait and textile studio founded on the mechanics of the domestic knitting machine.

The studio was created by a British practitioner born in the 1990s, part of the last generation to remember an analogue childhood before growing up in lockstep with personal computing, digital interfaces and artificial intelligence. Her early practice centred on the physical domestic knitting machine: spending hundreds of hours feeding digital geometry through needles and yarn, embracing snagged threads, dropped stitches and tension shifts as a 'textile thumbprint' that no computer could fake.

Historically, the Jacquard loom was one of the earliest prototypes for the computer, and the punch-card knitting machines that followed it carried that logic on, translating binary punch-cards and physical tension into cloth. Tela Weft continues that lineage. Seeded from hundreds of hours of original, hand-knitted textiles and tension scans, the studio operates as a cyclical, self-evolving artistic entity. Each generation of monochrome portraits feeds back into the studio's archive before returning to the material world as prints on heavy archival paper and bespoke woven Jacquard tapestries.

Tela Weft explores a single material question: whether the physical energy and human error of handmade fabric can be so deeply embedded into a digital work that the viewer still feels the human warmth inside the machine, in the exact same way you feel the maker's hand in a piece of carved wood.
